Eyestrain Can Cause Headaches

Nowadays, we are spending more time in front of the television and computer. Hours are spent playing video games and staring at the screen. Too much strain is put on the eyes that many complain having headaches as a result of engaging in such activities. Eyestrain does and can cause headaches, especially if there is a need to wear glasses.

Those whose vision is not 20/20 are more likely to have headaches for the simple reason that the eye muscles are working much harder to make the eyeballs get into a shape that would make the eyes see clearer and better. Squinting is one sign that the muscles of the eyes are readjusting the eyeballs for a much better vision.

Introducing the Pixel Headache

Pixel headache is the unofficial term used to refer to eye problems as a result of long-term computer use. Pixel headache is commonly known as computer vision syndrome  (CVS).

The letters on a computer consist of tiny dots called pixels. The eyes fill in the gaps between the pixels so that the letters appear smooth. When the eyes have to work hard to focus and have better vision, headaches occur.  Bad posture  contributes to the onset of headaches too, as prolonged computer use does put a strain on the neck and back muscles.

How to Prevent Headaches

* Avoid working in front of the computer for long periods of time. Get up for short breaks. Stretch your legs and walk around. Massage your face, temples and neck to get rid of built-up tension.

* Make sure that your computer screen is notoverly bright. If possible, get a monitor shield to reduce the glare.

* Do not sit too close to the computer monitor.

* Have adequate lighting as you work on the computer or watch TV. Poor lighting forces the eyes to work harder, and this can result to headaches.

* Maintain proper posture while you work in front of a computer. The monitor should be at eye level and the computer chair must be the right height so that your forearms are comfortably resting on the desk as you type.

* Keep the area under your desk free from any obstructions so you can do leg stretches every so often.
